Garden Visits
The Old Rectory,
A 5 acre garden in the process of development. The tour started in the courtyard with a parterre and clipped yew. Further on we discovered a bog garden, pond, meadow, vegetable garden and orchard.
Parnham House
The grounds had recently been closed to the public for restoration so we were able to see first hand the developments and restoration work required to bring the gardens back. We were fortunate to be shown round by the garden designer, Simon Johnson who explined the ambitious plans to us in detail.
Mapperton House
This wonderful Jacobean manor house has an Italianate formal garden with fountains, topiary and grottos, ponds and statuary, all laid out in the 1920’s. Also to be found in the gardens are two impressive 17th Century summerhouses and two large fishponds, with paths leading down to the stream through a water garden.
Cocktails were taken at Athelhampton, in the main house, after a short talk on its history by the owner. This was followed by a banquet in the long hall followed by the Society’s popular and unmissable auction.
